Overview
Black Cockatoo is written by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler with beautiful illustrations by Dub Leffler. Honours Book of the Year for Young Readers 2019 it is an easy-to-read novella that explores the difficulties young Aboriginal children in Australia face living between 2 cultures. It is told from the perspective of a 13-year-old girl, Mia, from a remote community in the Kimberley. It weaves traditional language with modern slang to tell the tale of Mia's brother's struggle with his family and her affinity with her totem animal - the dirran or black cockatoo.
