Overview
This 2023 CBCA notable Eve Pownall Award book is an colourful exploration of all the things a mother and daughter buy at their local fresh produce market. A great way to teach young children about varieties of fruit, vegetables, eggs and bread.
The activities for this book are designed to cement this teaching with activities to match eggs to the bird which laid them, a find a word to find everything the mum and her daughter bought on their shopping trip and a colouring activity to assist young children learn their colours.
If you would like to do something without worksheets you could collect a range of items shown in the book and let your children taste the items and rate them to find their favourite. This could be tasting a variety of fruits such as mangoes, pineapple, dragon fruit or rockmelon, a variety of one fruit such as 4 types of apples or tomatoes or a range of breads like they found at Pierre’s bread stall. Alternatively, you could collect some fresh herbs and have your children try to identify each herb by smell, feel and taste. They could draw each herb or use the flower pressing activity to dry the herbs so they can see how the smell weakens over time.
