Overview
This 2024 CBCA Notable Picture Book of the Year is a beautifully illustrated educational exploration into the affects of colonisation on the locust population across Australia. As European settlers cleared the land and filled in swamps they forced the resident ibises to migrate to cities. This meant that locusts had almost no natural predators and were able to grow in large, plague level, numbers.
The activities for this book are designed for older students to explore the devastating effects of pesticides, land clearing and how colonisation has shaped Australia.
