Overview

This 2023 shortlisted Early Childhood book is a beautifully illustrated family journey through the bush as an extended family take a bushwalk together to try to find a lyrebird. The lyrebird can be seen in the illustrations each time its ability to mimic sounds in mentioned which adds to the enjoyment children can feel from this book as they can “find” the lyrebird each time.


The activities for this book are geared towards younger children from those who have not yet started school to those in Kindergarten or Year 1.


If you prefer to get a little more active then this story is a great way to encourage children to take a walk in the bush and make a list either orally or written of the animals they can see and hear. For extended learning you could also watch the amazing footage narrated by Sir David Attenborough of a lyrebird mimicking a camera shutter, car alarm and chain saw.
