Overview
This 2023 CBCA picture book of the year is a beautifully illustrated story of love between a mother and her daughter and the joy of reuniting after a period of separating. It is also a story of the pollution in our oceans and the efforts of sailors to clean up plastic waste.
The activities for this book are designed for children from those not yet in school to those in their last years of primary school who would benefit from learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
If you wish to do something that is more active than a worksheet have children collect garbage around their school or neighbourhood. They could record the garbage collected or use the garbage to create a physical graph of the types of rubbish not making it to the bin and see what percentage of the garbage is in fact plastic waste, green waste or could be recycled.
