Celebrate Spring With Books About Gardening

Spring is finally here, bringing with it warmer weather, blooming flowers, and the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature! It's also a great time to inspire young readers with stories about gardening. Whether your students have access to a backyard or a small indoor garden, books about growing plants, tending to flowers, and connecting with nature can teach valuable lessons about patience, nurturing, and sustainability.

Here are a few fantastic fiction and non-fiction books that will inspire your students to embrace the joy of gardening this spring.

The Art Garden Activities

In The Art Garden, Sadie dreams of being an artist like her best friend, but she finds that painting isn’t her strength. As she explores the world around her, Sadie discovers that art can take many forms, and that she can create her own masterpieces in the garden using flowers and patterns. Use the activities on Learn From Play to create flower patterns, plant herbs and colour flowers.

Harriet's Hungry Worms activities

Harriet's Worms is a delightful tale about a young girl who learns to love gardening after discovering the magic of composting and worms. This book is a great way to introduce young readers to the science behind gardening, teaching them how worms play a crucial role in making soil healthy and plants grow strong. It’s an engaging, informative read that makes gardening exciting and fun for children and the activities at Learn From Play teach them about alliteration, worm food and let them make their own circle worms.

The Garden on Red Gum Road Activities

In The Garden on Red Gum Road, a young boy and his Nonna spend time in the community garden with friends, family, and pets, digging, planting seeds, and sharing the joy of working together. Phil Cummings’ lyrical text is perfect for early learners, encouraging them to predict and recite the rhythmic verses. Danny Snell’s illustrations bring the community garden to life, offering opportunities for discussions about friendship, the environment, and the importance of coming together. This heartwarming story is an excellent choice for introducing the concepts of teamwork and nature to young readers this spring as they use the activities we have created to enjoy garden inspired matching, colouring, counting and tracing worksheets.

For students who may not have access to traditional garden spaces, The Concrete Garden offers an alternative. This imaginative book shows how garden free urban spaces can be transformed into beautiful areas with some chalk and some team work. The activities we have made for this book inspire creativity and prove that you don’t need a backyard to enjoy the magic of creativity.

Why Gardening Books?

Gardening books, both fiction and non-fiction, provide children with an understanding of the natural world while fostering a sense of responsibility and care for the environment. Through these stories, young readers learn about the cycles of nature, the importance of looking after plants, and how their actions can positively impact the world around them.

At Learn From Play we have activities which will continue the learning journey, expand knowledge and encourage creativity. We delve deeper into aspects of each book, whilst also broadening understandings outside them.  As spring blossoms, these books are a wonderful way to connect children with nature, whether they’re planting their first seeds or simply learning about the world of gardening. So, let’s celebrate this new season by diving into stories that cultivate curiosity, creativity, and a love for the natural world.
